The daughter of Maestro Enrico Giannini, Maria, visited Japan just next month of my visit of Firenze. As like Mr.Mannina, who is introduced in another article, Miss Maria attended great Italian fair which was held in the Isetan department store in Shinjuku, Tokyo. I visited the booth of Giannini's, and expressed my thanks for her warm reception in Firenze. I could give her photographs taken in the previous month.

She was as busy as Mr.Mannina for performance of making marbled papers for the people arriving the booth one after another. As there was no holiday, there was no time to go out for sight seeing. I hope warm hearted Maria to visit Japan again. And if possible I wish to guide her Kyoto. Also I hope to hear from her father Maestro Enrico directly about his traditional handicraft work.

Finally, I will simply introduce to you how to make marbled papers from Maria's performance. It may seem to be easy to follow. However, as there are many knowhows everywhere, e.g. materials, you will soon realize it is very difficult to imitate.

How to make mable paper-1
(1) Drop dye onto special liquid
by beating the brush

(2) Creating pattern
on the dye membrane
by moving the spatula

(3) Next, creating parallel

How to make mable paper-4
(4) Put a sheet of paper
on the liquid
to blot the dye pattern

I feel products of Giannini have some relation with our Japanese aesthetic sense, because marbled paper resembles with Japanese "Suminagashi", and because they appreciate beauty in the character form of old handwritings, which is like Japanese calligraphy, "Shodo". If you come to Firenze, I recommend you to visit Giannini.
